| Sometimes the cork is just slightly too large to fit into
the neck of the bottle, and it is time to call for the services of the
cork compressor.
At the right is one at St. Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana, that fits a series of four standard sizes. This was sold by Knott of Boston ca. 1915 at a price of $0.25 Pictured below is one in the Greenslade Collection that
adjusts to compress a wide range of cork diameters. This large model could
handle corks up to 1.5 in. in diameter and was sold by Knott for $0.85;
the smaller model designed to compress corks up to 0.75 in. in diameter
cost $0.60.
