Extreme physics

Professor Tom Greenslade demonstrates Newton's Third Law at the Harvard Summer School in 1986. (Prof. Greenslade is known for his lecture demonstrations.)

Test-firing a liquid nitrogen cannon at the "Physics test range" near the Miller Observatory. The liquid nitrogen boils until the plastic soda bottle explodes. The two frames above are separated by 1/15 of a second, and the cannon tube is about two meters long. The projectile is a baseball.

Kenyon Physics student Alex Eversmeyer prepares for launch at the "Physics test range."

Launching a hot air balloon out on the lawn. The library can be seen in the background. The air in the balloon is heated by three lighted cans of Sterno under the base of the chimney.
